FELON SENTENCED TO EIGHT YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR POSSESSION OF HANDGUN

LAS VEGAS - - A recidivist felon who stored his handgun in a bedroom he had been sharing with small children was sentenced to eight years in federal prison today following his guilty plea to felon in possession of a firearm, announced Greg Brower, United States Attorney for the District of Nevada.

Brandon Monghur, also know as “Lil Red,” 30, of Las Vegas, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Philip M. Pro. FBI agents discovered the firearm during a search of an apartment Monghur was sharing with a female roommate and her small children. In a bedroom Monghur shared with the children, agents discovered a silver-colored .38 caliber handgun inside an unlocked storage bin on the top shelf of the closet. The closet was not locked and a ladder was found next to the closet.

Monghur has prior felony convictions in Nevada for Burglary, Battery with a Deadly Weapon, and Possession with Intent to Sell. He was sentenced in state court on January 30, 2008, to 10 years to life after a jury convicted him of charges including Battery Domestic Violence with Use of a Deadly Weapon, First Degree Kidnaping and Coercion. Monghur will serve his federal sentence first. There is no parole in the federal judicial system.

The case was investigated by the FBI, North Las Vegas Police Department, and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kathleen Bliss.
